PSHE - UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Our PSHE education curriculum aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of the core themes:
· Mental health and emotional well-being
· Healthy and unhealthy relationships
· Physical health
· Personal safety and risk management
· Media influence
· Friendships and anti-bullying
· Diversity and prejudice
· Sexual health
The PSHE curriculum is ‘spiral’ in nature so that topics will be re-visited, sometimes every year. This allows for deepening of understanding as pupils mature. It also builds in the flexibility to alter provision according in accordance with changes to government policy or position.
The national curriculum also states that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice'. PSHE education contributes to schools' statutory duties outlined in the Education Act 2002 and the Academies Act 2010 to provide a balanced and broad-based curriculum and is essential to Ofsted judgements in relation to personal development, behaviour, welfare and safeguarding. The relationships and health aspects of PSHE education will be compulsory from 2020.
At Castle Donington College we take a thematic approach to PSHE education, covering ten core themes over six half terms. We ensure that opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and attributes exist and that the programme is relevant and appropriate to the ethos of the College and the needs of our students. PSHE is taught to all pupils in Year 7-11 once a week. PSHE is delivered by tutors under the leadership of Heads of Year.
PSHE objectives are also delivered through assemblies, through visiting speakers and through year group activities. They are also delivered through other subject curricula (e.g. RSE in Science).
